Enter India markets smoothly

For foreign mid-cap companies in sectors like low voltage switchgear, compressors, cranes, control gear, and construction machinery, India remains an attractive yet complex destination. The country’s $1.7 trillion industrial market (2025 projection) is growing at 10% annually. But beneath the surface of opportunity lies a formidable challenge: Are your products compliant with India’s evolving Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS standards) regulations? Especially if you have a subsidiary in India or plan to import products, non-compliance can derail your market entry or disrupt ongoing operations.

BIS Compliance Challenges: Donโ€™t Let Your Shipment Get Stuck at Customs

One of the most pressing hurdles foreign manufacturers face is aligning with India’s mandatory BIS certification requirements. A single misstepโ€”like using outdated documentation or assuming global certifications sufficeโ€”can result in shipment rejections, customs delays, or even a complete ban on your products.

From August 28, 2025, new Quality Control Orders (QCOs) by BIS will mandate certification for 250+ industrial products, spanning machinery, steel components, and electrical equipment. These measures are part of Indiaโ€™s drive to align its standards with global benchmarks and strengthen local safety and performance.

At Maier Vidorno Altios, we often meet companies unaware of whatโ€™s requiredโ€”until their shipments are stuck at the port. We ensure your documentation is complete, testing protocols are met, and the right BIS authority is engaged well in advance.

Whatโ€™s Changing Under the New BIS Standard QCOs:

  • Mandatory Certification: BIS certification will be required for over 20 categories, including machine tools (used for stone, ceramics, etc.) and household electrical appliances (toasters, grillers) and their components.
  • Wide Applicability: Whether your product is made in India or imported, certification is a must. Importers and distributors must verify that their foreign manufacturing partners are BIS-compliant before products land in India.
  • Strict Enforcement: Products without valid BIS certification will not be allowed for sale or distribution post-August 2025. Delays in certification could directly lead to market access loss.

Highlights of BIS Regulations & Enforcement Timelines

Upcoming QCO Enforcement (until August 31, 2025):

  • Machinery & Components: BIS certification for machine tools, household electrical appliances, and components becomes mandatory.
  • Steel & Fasteners: Certification deadlines for stainless steel pipes, hinges, wrenches, and Phillips screws.
  • Chemicals & Materials: HDPE/PP woven sacks, polypropylene moulding material, acetic acid, methanol, and polyvinyl chloride must comply by mid-2025.
  • Flashlights, hinges, and poly-laminated cables are among the lesser-known categories now regulated.
Example: IS 10951:2020 for Polypropylene (PP) Moulding and Extrusion Material is enforceable from 24 June 2025

Several enforcement dates have been extended due to industry feedback or localization challenges:

  • Low-Voltage Switchgear & Control Gear: Delayed to 10 November 2025
  • Aluminium Products: General enforcement from 1 October 2025, small and micro enterprise deadlines in 2026
  • Household Electrical Appliances: Extended to Marchโ€“September 2026 based on company size

If your product was scheduled for Q2 2025 enforcement, double-check the new timelines to avoid missed deadlines.
